DATA SNAP: Austrian February Jobless Rate Up 6.1% On Year

The number of unemployed people in Austria increased by 6.1% on the year in February due to the cold snap, the Austrian labor and social affairs ministry said Thursday.

The increase means 310,064 people are out of work in the Alpine country, although unemployment should now fall due to the warmer weather.

"Thousands of jobs, for example in construction, which were temporarily lost due to the cold snap, will come back today or in the next few days or weeks. Almost 100,000 unemployed people have already received a job offer," the ministry said.

In January, overall unemployment increased 2.7% on the year giving an unemployment rate of 8.6%. This was following an increase in unemployment of 0.8% on the year in December to an unemployment rate of 8.2%. The ministry hasn't published full data for February.

Based on Eurostat's method of calculating unemployment, Austria's jobless rate in January was 4%--the lowest in the European Union. Eurostat's figures for February aren't available.
